Monday Motivation; running in the rain, again

Subtitle: The Weekend That Wasn’t

Monday is always a new start.

I was sick all weekend and didn’t run at all. I’m off track for my A Race in September. And I need to get back at it.

Instead of being frustrated about another Monday New Start and the fact that it is STILL raining, I’m going to get in my running tights and rain jacket and get out there.

Because even when you feel like you’re starting from the beginning, the feeling after a good run – the high – feels so much better!

Happy Monday and don’t forget to be awesome!

Should you run when you are sick? Long run canceled, I’m sick

I started feeling a cold come on yesterday. I still ran my short run knowing that I couldn’t push it too much because I had a 13 miler on Saturday. I continued not feeling well at work Friday, drank tea and had a delicious smoothie from Live Juice (Wake Me Up with Green Tea, Hemp and Bananas) in the afternoon. Not feeling much better at 7 p.m.,  I went to bed early and woke up with a sore throat and phlegm.

No long run this morning.

I think it’s best to look at the long game when it comes to running when sick.

While I’m not running for the podium, I’m running for health, fitness and longevity. It doesn’t behoove me to run when I’m sick. However, I do have several upcoming races and need to be running long; I can make up for it this coming week.

I will run tomorrow’s Dirty 5K in Hanover knowing I’m taking care of myself today. It’s a three-mile trail run so even if I must walk it – I’m okay with it.

This morning I will eat blueberry pancakes, read the paper and sleep. Sometimes that is all one can do.

Here is a good article by Mindy Solkin : “To Run or Not to Run… What to Do When You’re Sick“.

How to Recover Right

I’ve always been pretty good at recovery after a hard workout.

On long bike rides I pass the time thinking about what I will eat when I get home and what show I’ll binge-watch on Netflix as I stay off my feet and recover.

After long runs – the same.

I love food and I long binge-watching my favorite TV shows.

As I get older I’ve been focusing on much more stretching and foam rolling post workout, and making sure I have enough time to do it well especially when time is short in the morning mid-week.

When I lived in Colorado my gym even had a class on Fridays called Stretch that was really a foam-rolling class. It was a great lesson on the importance of long-slow rolling on every major muscle group; and not rushing through it, which I have a tendency to do.

TriggerPoint has some great videos on foam rolling basics:

There is even a Pinterest board to help figure out the best ways to roll.

Happy Friday. See you out on your Long Run tomorrow!

Upcoming Races in New Hampshire

On Saturday I need to run 13 miles for my training plan. I’ve considered signing up for a half marathon to stay focus but I’m non-committal right now.

My biggest goal is to get out the door this morning and run seven.

On Sunday morning, May 14 I’m running a trail race. The Dirty 5K – the first event in the Western New Hampshire Trail Running Series. The trail run is in Hanover and I haven’t been to Hanover in many years or may I’ve only driven through it. It’s been a long time, so it’s time to see it.

That’s why I sign up for races – to see places I’ve never been to and to learn about new places. I love discovering new trails and beautiful places. It is a part of why I haven’t been able to live in one place for a long time. Our world is so big and filled with adventure; I want to see and do it all.

The Granite State Marathon is this weekend in Nashua. The Purple Ribbon 5k Run in Bow, NH is Sunday.

Next Thursday, May 18 is the 2017 Merrimack County Savings Bank Rock ‘N Race in downtown Concord. I’ll be signing up this week.

Many fun races this week. I’m going to get out there and run now. Go sign up and find new places to fall in love with.

Updated: Today’s run. It’s not seven but I did what I could.

Outdoor Products I love: Isotherm Jacket by The North Face

As part of the North Face Locals Ambassador program they send athletes a box of products to try each year. This year when I received it I was living in Colorado. It doesn’t rain as much as it does there as it does here in New Hampshire where I now live so I didn’t get much of chance to try rain hear. Now, I wear the Women’s Isotherm jacket almost every run and it’s my go-to running jacket to stay warm and dry.

Here’s me in my jacket in February when I ran a loop near Rye Beach.

The jacket has always kept me dry and warm. I’ve been running in all kinds of weather: wind, rain, misty rain, rain and wind and earlier in March snow.

With all the rain and cold temperatures, I wear this jacket, a long sleeve shirt, running tights and I’m good for any distance. This morning, Tuesday, May 9, 2017 it is 32 degrees. I will be adding a beanie and gloves.

I’m a bit biased when it comes to The North Face products because I’ve tried so many of their winter jackets, running tights, hats, vests and backpacks. The products have never let me down and I’m proud to be an ambassador.

Today’s run.
